Wow, 3 Years Already?

Time flies when you're....sure does.  Its been 3 years since I started doing Pussy Galore at the Whistle Stop in South Park.  Taking a look back at the history of the night itself, it started at the Beauty Bar when they first opened in San Diego.  I was asked to do a weekly night and thought it would be great to feature all female DJs and mix in martinis and manicures.  That worked really well.  After awhile I wanted to branch out to include other venues.  I moved the night to the SDSC (now known as Ruby Room) and started having bands play.  Then I went to the Brass Rail for awhile. And now its monthly home is at the Whistle Stop, which has been my favorite venue so far.  I always have one or two bands play along with spinning a mix of electro, indie, 80s, britpop and whatever else tickles your fancy.

This Friday we will be celebrating and I hope you can join the party.

The Question I Get Asked Most

You might think it's, "So, who was the nicest band you've ever interviewed?"  Or, "Who was the biggest a**hole in the music biz you've ever met?" Possibly, "What is your favorite band of all time?" Yes, I get asked those questions quite a bit.  But the most common one is...where are you DJing next?  That's one of the reasons I have this blog.  In the top right corner I list all of my upcoming gigs and update them as they come in.  As the dates get closer I'll go into more detail about the event and provide you with links to get more info.  There ya go!  Now I even know where to find me.  :-)

Bats Day Weekend recap

Now that I've had a few days to recover from my weekend, I have some time to recap the Bats Day festivities.  For those of you that don't know about Bats Day, it's been happening for over a decade.  It's a day where thousands of people dressed in black (and other colors) converge at the Happiest Place On Earth...Disneyland!  There's a whole weekend of events planned in conjunction with Bats Day.  I missed the fun Friday night but managed to make it to the Black Market for a few hours on Saturday.  There were some cool vendors there with everything from jewelry to clothes to accessories like parasols and hats.  I didn't buy anything though.  I had spent some money the week before on a new outfit for the Dark Park Festival, which happened that night at the official Bats Day Hotel...The Doubletree.  But I'm getting ahead of myself.

First up...soundcheck. Yes, even DJs have a soundcheck.  That's where we show up and get acquainted with the equipment and work out any problems ahead of time.  I had one of those.  The adaptor from my headphones had accidentally detached from my headphone jack and got left at the last place I DJ'd at.  Grrrrr.....So, at the last minute on Saturday I grabbed an adaptor from an old pair of headphones that I don't use anymore but have just in case I have nothing else, as they are in mono.  I thought...good to go, right?  Wrong.  I plugged in my headphones and ear.  I was so pissed.  Aren't all Sony adaptors universal?  I thought so but I guess not.  It was a hassle having one ear but I managed to make do.  It's funny because the DJ that played before me didn't have headphones and he asked to borrow mine.  He didn't even care that they weren't working correctly, so that made me feel better.  I am such a perfectionist when it comes to my DJ accessories and when they fail me, it pisses me off.  In the end, it all worked out.  I played a solid 45 minute set and kept the dance floor going the whole time.  Most of these people had never heard me DJ before, so that made me feel pretty good.  Plus, I didn't plan out my set.  Honestly, I rarely do.  I wing it and play to the crowd and requests.  If something isn't working I try something different, unlike some DJs who play what they want to hear.

Then it was time for a visit to the green room.  Lots of booze and great conversation with new people.  Made some interesting contacts that night.  Went back downstairs to hang out a little bit longer.  Then, I called it a night around 11:45pm.  It was hard to get to sleep.  Some people sleep well in hotels.  Not me...I'm all about the pillow and they rarely work for me in hotels.

Woke up after getting a few hours of sleep.  Pulled myself together and took the shuttle over to Disneyland.  Yay...Bats Day!!!  Went to The Rainforest Cafe with Jim, Mark, Lora, Marjy and Mike.  Had a yummy breakfast, although the bacon isn't as good as it used to be.  Then we took the tram to the other side of the park and we began our journey.  Made it to the Castle for the first official Bats Day photo.  Ran into a bunch of people from San Diego.  Then did some more adventures before the Haunted Mansion meet-up and photos.  By 10pm I was pooped and ready to call it a weekend.  Grabbed my stuff from the hotel and drove home.  Made it in record time.  Spent all day Monday getting things back in order.  I got a pretty good night's sleep Monday night.  So, I'm feeling better.

Thanks to Noah for having me DJ the big event over the weekend.  It was great seeing so many people from San Diego there to support me.  Can't wait for next year!

Bats Day Weekend!

Yay!  I'm gearing up for Bats Day weekend!  I'll be checking out the Black Market for a few hours this Saturday.  Then getting all dolled up for the pre-event soiree before the main event that night.  I'll be spinning a set during the evening and am really looking forward to socializing and meeting those attending these parties.  Then Sunday it's a full day at Disneyland with the rest of the people dressed in black.  Can't wait to see all the fun outfits.  People go all out for Bats Day weekend.

Vegas Baby Vegas

I traveled to Las Vegas earlier this week to join in on the celebration for my Dad's 80th birthday.  Hard to believe he has reached that age.  He is still working out like gangbusters.  I know that's where I get my fitness drive from.  I remember watching his at the gym at an early age.  I was blown away by how much weight he could lift.  My Dad has an amazing physique but he's always had tiny legs.  Wish I got that from him.  Why is it we always get things we don't want from our family.

We had a lot of fun in Las Vegas.  Highlights included lunch with sex kitten Holly Madison and getting on stage at David Copperfield.  The low point was food poisoning.  I'm not sure where I ingested the nasty bug.  The only different thing I had from anyone else was a salad.  Maybe the dressing or the lettuce was bad?  Either way, I wasn't doing very well from 11pm to 3am the night before we were leaving.  Hey, at least it was the last day.  Needless to say, all the weight I had gained over those 3 days was lost in the blink of an eye.  Well, two eyes.  24 hours later I was almost back to normal and now I am my old self again.  Yay, back to eating sushi and dark chocolate.

This morning I went to the press screening for "The Runaways."  This is a movie I've been wanting to see ever since I heard it was being made.  I must admit I was skeptical after hearing that Kristen Stewart was cast as Joan Jett.  From a "Twilight" perspective, I didn't think she could pull it off.  Boy was I wrong!  She blew me away.  I've had the pleasure of interviewing Joan Jett several times throughout my radio career, so I know her pretty well.  Stewart had her mannerisms down and even managed to sing pretty well.  She captured the punk rock girl power attitude that Jett is known for.  Chew you up and spit you out.

Dakota Fanning nailed the character of Cheri Currie.  Naive but sexy, innocent but playful.  She made it edgy and fun.  To quote Peaches, the girls wanna be her.  We saw her rise and fall from the perils of fame.

I was so fired up when I walked out of the theater.  I even got interviewed by someone from CNN and sounded like a blithering idiot because my mind was all a flutter.  Hopefully I made some sense.  At least I had my shades on.  The strangest part of the post-movie experience was when some guy asked me what movie we just saw. Wow, I didn't realize people actually snuck in to those things.

I'm an even bigger fan of Joan Jett and The Runaways now, if that's possible.  Kudos to first time feature director Floria Sigismondi.  She did make some bold decisions throughout the movie that added so much to the depth of the characters and the overall feel of the story itself.  No spoilers here.  But once you see it you will know exactly what I am talking about.

It makes me so happy that Joan Jett is still playing music to this day.  I think after seeing this movie she will have a whole new generation of fans.  I love Rock N Roll!

The Road Ahead

I am going to be involved in some really fun events in San Diego and beyond.  I can't talk about a few of them yet but I'm really looking forward to what's ahead.  DJing is my passion.  Connecting with the audience is so important to me, whether it's live in a club or on the radio.  It still means so much after all these years.  I feel music in my soul.  I am a performer at heart.  It's a way to combine two of the loves of my life.

Your support has meant so much to me over the years.  I feel that DJing is a privilege and don't take it for granted.  As things move forward, I will continue to grow and spread my wings.  Fly Robin Fly!

The 11th Hour

I'm looking forward to my first show of 2010 on Legit Radio Friday at 11am.  Tune in and check out everything from Darkwave to Industrial.  I play all kinds of dark underground music, whether it be Synth and Future Pop, EBM, Ethereal, Deathrock...sometimes you can't even define the genre.  I started doing the show on Legit back in October of last year.  It's been really fun connecting with the community of people that listen to the station.  Chatting with everyone is awesome.  But sometimes I forget I am on camera.  I'll bend over and whoahhhhh!!!  Then again, that's what makes it so interesting.  You just never know what will happen.
